Laundry appliances are the purchase people research the least and regret the most, because the constraints are physical and unforgiving. Before you compare a single model, write down these five answers:
- What is your dryer hookup? Gas line and a 120V outlet, or a 240V dryer outlet? This decides half your options instantly.
- What is your vent situation? Where does the duct run, how long is it, and how many elbows does it turn?
- How much space, exactly? Width, depth with the door open, height, and the door swing of the room itself.
- How does it get in? Basement stairs and second-floor laundry closets stop more deliveries than any showroom conversation.
- How much laundry do you actually do? Loads per week matters far more than household size for sizing capacity.
Top Load vs. Front Load
This is the real decision, and the honest answer is that both are good now. Front loaders won the efficiency argument a decade ago; top loaders answered with high-efficiency impeller models that close much of the gap.
Front Load Washers
A horizontal drum tumbles clothes through a shallow pool of water. Less water, less mechanical abuse on fabric, higher spin speeds, and the ability to stack a dryer on top.

Washer capacity is measured in cubic feet of drum volume. The number that matters is not household size but how many loads you want to run and whether you need to wash bulky items at home.

Two practical rules. First, match the dryer to roughly twice the washer capacity — a 4.5 cubic foot washer pairs with a 7.0–7.5 cubic foot dryer, because wet clothes need room to tumble. Second, bigger is not always better: a mega-capacity washer running half-empty loads wastes water and energy, and it costs more to buy. Buy the size that lets you wash your bulkiest normal item — usually a comforter — and stop there.
Gas vs. Electric vs. Heat Pump
Gas Dryers
A gas burner heats the air. Dries faster and costs meaningfully less per load to run in most of Michigan, where natural gas is cheap relative to electricity. Costs $50–$150 more up front and requires a gas line plus a 120V outlet.
Standard Electric (Vented) Dryers
A resistance element heats the air. Cheaper to buy, more expensive per load, requires a dedicated 240V circuit. The default in homes and apartments without gas service.
Heat Pump Dryers
The newest category and the most misunderstood. A heat pump dryer recirculates air through a refrigeration loop, condensing moisture out instead of blowing it outside. It plugs into a standard 120V outlet, needs no vent at all, and uses roughly half the energy of a conventional electric dryer.
- Pros: No vent required, lowest running cost of any electric option, standard outlet, very gentle on fabrics because it dries at lower temperature
- Cons: Cycles run 30–60% longer, clothes come out warm rather than hot, higher purchase price, needs the condensate drained or the tank emptied
- Best for: Condos, apartments, interior laundry closets, second-floor laundry rooms, and anywhere running a new vent duct is impractical

Venting: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong
More dryer complaints trace back to the duct than to the machine. A dryer that takes two cycles to dry a load is usually a venting problem, not a failing appliance.
- Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Flexible foil and plastic accordion duct trap lint and are a genuine fire hazard. Many building codes prohibit them.
- Keep the run short. A common limit is about 35 feet total, minus roughly 5 feet for every 90-degree elbow. Two elbows and 30 feet of duct is already over the line.
- Slope it and seal it with foil tape, not screws. Screws project into the duct and collect lint.
- Check the exterior flap twice a year. In Michigan, the flap freezes shut, birds nest behind it, and snow blocks it — all of which strangle airflow.
- Clean the full duct annually. Lint at the wall cap is the visible part of a much longer problem.
Side-by-Side, Stacked, and All-in-One
- Side-by-side: The default. Needs about 56–60 inches of width for a full-size pair with an inch of breathing room between units. Gives you a folding surface on top.
- Stacked: Front loader with a dryer above, using a manufacturer-specific stacking kit. Needs roughly 75–80 inches of height. Never stack without the kit — the dryer will walk off during a spin cycle.
- Laundry center: A single welded unit with washer below and dryer above. Cheap and space-efficient, but if one half fails you replace the whole thing.
- All-in-one combo: Washes and dries in the same drum. Genuinely useful in a condo with one 120V outlet and no vent, but the dry cycle is slow and the load capacity for drying is smaller than for washing.
- Pedestals: Raise a front loader 12–15 inches to a comfortable height and add a storage drawer. They add real cost and real comfort; on a stacked pair they are not an option.
Features Worth Paying For (and the Ones That Are Not)
Worth it:
- Moisture-sensing dry. Stops the cycle when clothes are dry rather than when a timer ends. Saves energy and stops cooking your t-shirts.
- High spin speed (1,200+ RPM). Every extra bit of water spun out is drying time you do not pay for.
- Sanitize / allergen cycle. Meaningful if anyone in the house has allergies or you wash a lot of bedding.
- Steam. Genuinely helps with wrinkles and set-in odors. Requires a hot water line on some models.
- Auto dispensers. Fill once a month, correct dose every load. More useful than it sounds, since overdosing detergent is the leading cause of residue and smell.
- Vibration control. Essential for a second-floor or over-crawlspace install.
Usually not worth it: a dozen specialty cycles you will never select, app connectivity for a machine you stand next to anyway, and interior drum lighting. Extended cycle menus rarely change outcomes; water temperature, spin speed and time do.
Efficiency, Water, and What It Costs to Run
An ENERGY STAR certified washer uses roughly 25% less energy and 33% less water than a standard model. Over a ten-year life at eight loads a week, that difference is real money — usually a few hundred dollars — and it is larger in a household with kids.
The larger lever, though, is behavioral:
- Wash cold. Heating water is most of a washer’s energy use, and modern detergents are formulated for cold.
- Run full loads, but do not pack the drum — clothes need room to move or they do not get clean.
- Use less detergent than you think. HE machines need about a tablespoon. Excess suds cushion the clothes and leave residue.
- Clean the lint screen every load. A coated screen from dryer sheets cuts airflow badly; scrub it with a brush a few times a year.
Measuring the Laundry Space
Full-size washers and dryers are 27 inches wide, with depths of 31–34 inches for front loaders and 27–30 for top loaders. Compact units are 24 inches wide. Those are the machine dimensions — the space needs more.
- Add 6 inches of depth behind for hoses, the vent elbow, and the electrical connection. A periscope vent recovers several of those inches in a tight closet.
- Add 1 inch of width on each side and between units for vibration.
- Check the door swing. A front loader door adds 20–25 inches when open, and the hinge side matters — many are field-reversible, but not all.
- Top loaders need lid clearance, typically 20 inches above the machine. Do not put a shelf where the lid opens.

Installation and Hookups
- Water: Hot and cold shutoff valves. Replace rubber hoses with braided stainless steel — a burst hose is one of the most common sources of major water damage in a house.
- Drain: A standpipe of the correct height (usually 30–36 inches from the floor) or a laundry tub. Too low and the machine siphons; too high and the pump strains.
- Electrical: 120V for the washer, 240V for an electric dryer, 120V for gas or heat pump dryers. Never use an extension cord on either.
- Gas: Shutoff valve, flexible connector rated for the appliance, and a leak check with soapy water after connection.
- Level the machines. Front loaders spinning at 1,200 RPM on an unlevel floor walk across the room and destroy their own bearings. Use a level on the top and adjust all four feet.
- Remove the shipping bolts. Every front loader ships with them, and running the machine with them in place damages the suspension immediately. They are in the back, and you keep them for the next move.
Maintenance That Doubles the Lifespan
- Monthly: Wipe the front loader gasket, clean the detergent drawer, run a tub-clean cycle.
- Quarterly: Vacuum under and behind both machines. Lint accumulation back there is a fire risk and a heat problem.
- Twice a year: Check the exterior vent flap, inspect water hoses for bulges, clean the washer’s drain pump filter (usually a small door at the bottom front of a front loader).
- Annually: Have the full dryer duct cleaned, and re-level both machines.
- Every five years: Replace the water supply hoses regardless of how they look.
