Getting From Romulus Into the City
From our warehouse at 6345 Beverly Plaza in Romulus, Detroit is roughly 25 minutes east on I-94 to the near-in neighborhoods, and longer to the far east side or at rush hour. The city is big enough that the route depends a lot on where you live:
- Downtown, Midtown, New Center and the east side: I-94 east, then the Lodge, I-75 or surface streets.
- Southwest Detroit: I-94 to I-75, or straight in on Michigan Avenue or Fort Street.
- West and northwest side: the Southfield Freeway north, then the surface grid, or I-96 for neighborhoods closer to it.
Because Detroit covers so much ground, the delivery quote for a far east side address will differ from one near the Southfield Freeway. If you have a truck or trailer, warehouse pickup of in-stock items is an option too. Our staff will help you load; bring straps and blankets for the ride home.
Detroit Housing, Type by Type
Detroit has some of the most varied housing in our delivery area, and each type has its own trouble spot.
Bungalows and brick single-family homes
Large parts of the city’s neighborhoods are brick bungalows and modest single-family homes from the early and middle 20th century. Expect a front porch with steps, a standard front door, a narrow stair to a finished upstairs with sloped ceilings, and a basement stair that often has low headroom. The upstairs bedroom is usually the hardest room to furnish: a queen bed may go up fine while a tall dresser will not clear the slope at the top.
Two-family flats
Two-family flats, with one unit stacked on top of the other, are common across many older Detroit neighborhoods. The upper unit typically has its own entry and a long, straight, narrow stair, sometimes with a turn or a door right at the top. Straight stairs are easier than winding ones, but a long sofa has to climb the whole run at an angle without hitting the ceiling, and the door at the top leaves no room to pivot.
Large historic homes
Neighborhoods with large older homes, often on the east side, along the river and in parts of the north and northwest side, bring their own issues. The main stair may be wide and grand, but doorways, landings and back stairs can be narrower than you would expect, and woodwork, plaster and original floors are worth protecting. For big dining tables, armoires and bedroom sets in these homes, measure every door on the route, not just the front entry.
Lofts and Apartment Buildings
Downtown, Midtown, Corktown and along the riverfront, many people live in apartment buildings or lofts in converted older commercial and industrial buildings. These deliveries depend on the building as much as on the furniture.
- Freight elevators. Many buildings require you to reserve the freight elevator for a set window. Find out the interior dimensions of the cab and the door, including height, because a tall headboard or a sofa on end has to fit inside it.
- Loading docks. If the building has a dock, ask where it is, its hours and whether deliveries must use it. Some docks are on a side street or an alley rather than the main entrance.
- Building paperwork. Some managed buildings ask delivery companies for a certificate of insurance or other details ahead of time. Ask your building what it requires and tell us when you call, before a delivery day is set.
- Long hallways. Converted buildings can have long corridors between the elevator and the unit, sometimes with a tight turn at the unit door.
Street Parking and the Long Carry
Many Detroit homes have no driveway at the front, or have a narrow side drive or a garage off the alley. That means the truck often parks on the street, and the crew carries from the curb.
- Tell us if the block has permit parking, a hydrant or a bike lane in front of the house.
- If you can, keep a space open in front of the house on delivery day. Asking a neighbor to move a car for an hour helps a lot.
- If the easier path is through the back, say so. Sometimes an alley entrance and a back door beat the front porch steps.
- Downtown and near the stadiums, traffic and parking can change sharply on game and event days. If your building is nearby, keep that in mind when you pick a day.
Detroit Delivery Checklist
- Measure the narrowest point of the path: porch door, storm door, stair, landing or the door at the top of a flat stair.
- Check headroom on upstairs and basement stairs, and the sloped ceiling in bungalow bedrooms.
- Get your building’s rules for elevators, docks, hours and any paperwork.
- Measure the freight elevator cab and door, including height.
- Describe the parking: street, alley, side drive, restrictions.
- Know the diagonal depth of sofas and recliners. Use the Will It Fit? tool or our measuring guide.
- In winter, clear and salt the porch steps and the walk from the curb.
- Have someone 18 or older home, and inspect every piece before signing.
Which Guides to Read
- Will it fit? — first, for any flat, bungalow upstairs or loft building.
- Small-space furniture — apartments, studios and upper flats.
- Dining room furniture — for formal dining rooms in older homes.
- Bedroom furniture — sizing for sloped-ceiling bedrooms.
- Area rugs — protecting original hardwood floors.
- Furniture care — dry winter air, and radiator heat in older homes, can be hard on wood.
- Home furniture glossary — for decoding spec sheets.
Scheduling and Quoting
Call (734) 444-7277 with your address and the items you are buying. We quote delivery per address and per item. Tell us on that call about flats, walk-ups, freight elevators, loading docks or street parking, so the plan matches the building.
Delivery days follow our Wednesday through Sunday schedule. The full process is on our Southeast Michigan delivery page. If you are near the city line on the west or south side, our Dearborn and Downriver pages may be useful as well.
Items bought through our Amazon or Walmart listings are shipped by those retailers, not delivered by us.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you deliver everywhere in Detroit?
We deliver across the city from our Romulus warehouse, including ZIPs such as 48201, 48202, 48207, 48209, 48219, 48221, 48224, 48228 and 48235. Distance is part of the quote, so an east side address will price differently from one on the west side near the Southfield Freeway. Call (734) 444-7277 with your address and the items and we will quote that specific delivery.
How do I deliver to the upper unit of a two-family flat?
Measure the stair to the upper unit before you buy. In many Detroit flats the upper unit has its own front door that opens onto a long, narrow, straight stair, sometimes with a turn at the top and a low ceiling over it. Measure the stair width, the door at the top and the headroom, then compare them to the diagonal depth of the sofa or the dimensions of the bed.
My loft building has a freight elevator and loading dock. What do you need from me?
Ask building management for the rules and pass them along when you call: freight elevator reservation times, the loading dock location and hours, whether pads are required, and whether they ask delivery companies for a certificate of insurance or any paperwork in advance. We set the delivery day after we know those details, which avoids a truck waiting at a locked dock.
There is no driveway at my house. Where will the truck park?
On the street or in an alley, whichever is closest and legal. Tell us when you call what parking looks like in front of your home: a hydrant, a bike lane, permit parking, or a block that fills up with cars. If you can, keep a space open in front of the house on delivery day. A shorter carry is faster and safer for the furniture and your floors.
Can I pick up in Romulus instead of having it delivered?
Yes, for in-stock items. We are at 6345 Beverly Plaza in Romulus, about 25 minutes from the city on I-94. Hours are Wednesday through Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm and Sunday noon to 3pm. Bring a truck or trailer that fits the piece, plus straps and blankets, and our staff will help load. Call first to confirm the item is in stock.
