Heading North From Romulus

Livonia and Garden City sit directly north of us, and the routes are simple. From our warehouse at 6345 Beverly Plaza in Romulus, the usual way up is Merriman or Middlebelt, both of which run north through Westland and Garden City into Livonia. For addresses on the west side of Livonia, I-275 north is often quicker, and I-96 crosses the city east to west for the northern neighborhoods.

Garden City is closer, often around 15 minutes. South Livonia is roughly 20 minutes, and the north end near Seven and Eight Mile can run closer to half an hour depending on traffic. Distance is part of every delivery quote, so a north Livonia address will price a little differently from Garden City.

Warehouse pickup is also a reasonable option from here. If you have a pickup truck or trailer, in-stock items can be picked up during store hours and our staff will help you load. Call ahead to confirm the item is on the floor.

Ranches, Tri-Levels and Compact Lots

The two cities sit next to each other but have quite different housing.

Livonia

Much of Livonia was built in the 1950s and 1960s, and the city is full of brick ranches, colonials, and split-level and tri-level homes, most on standard suburban lots with driveways and attached or detached garages. Basements are common in ranches and colonials. Newer homes and condos fill in some areas, but the mid-century stock is what most deliveries look like.

For delivery, that is mostly good news. Driveways give the truck a place to park close to the door, and ranch layouts mean fewer stairs. The constraints tend to be interior: 30-inch bedroom doors in many mid-century homes, short hallways with a tight turn, and basement stairs with low headroom.

Garden City

Garden City is smaller and more compact, with a lot of modest post-war ranches and bungalows on narrower lots. Bedrooms and living rooms are often smaller than a buyer coming from a newer house expects, and some homes have a finished upstairs reached by a narrow stair. Here the question is just as often “does it fit the room?” as “does it fit through the door?”

πŸ’‘ Tape It on the Floor In a compact Garden City living room, mark the sofa and coffee table footprint on the floor with painter’s tape before you buy. Leave about 30 inches for walkways. If it feels cramped in tape, it will feel cramped in fabric.

Delivering Into a Split-Level or Tri-Level

Split-level and tri-level homes deserve their own section because they catch people out. Instead of one full staircase, you have two or three short half-flights, usually five to eight steps each. They look easy. They often are not.

  • Turns at both ends. Half-flights often start and end at a wall, a railing or a doorway, so a long piece has to pivot twice in a small space.
  • Railings and spindles. Open railings take inches off the usable width and are easy to scuff. A crew may need to angle the piece over them.
  • Low ceilings over the lower flight. The flight down to the family room often runs under the upper level, so headroom is limited.
  • Bedrooms on the upper level. Mattresses, box springs and dressers all go up a half-flight and then down a hallway, often with a 90-degree turn into the bedroom.

If you live in one of these homes, measure the stair width between railings, the landing depth at each end and the ceiling height over each flight. A sectional that splits into pieces, a split box spring, or a dresser with removable mirror and legs makes these deliveries far simpler.

Livonia & Garden City Checklist

  1. Measure interior doors, especially bedroom doors, which are often narrower than the front door in mid-century homes.
  2. Measure each half-flight in a split-level: width, landing depth and headroom.
  3. Check the basement stair if the piece is headed for a rec room, including the turn at the bottom.
  4. Measure the room itself, not just the path, especially in smaller Garden City homes.
  5. Use the diagonal depth for sofas and recliners. The Will It Fit? tool compares it to your doorway.
  6. Clear the driveway so the truck can pull close, and move cars if the drive is narrow.
  7. In winter, clear and salt the drive, walk and steps before delivery.
  8. Remove the old piece or at least move it out of the path before the crew arrives.

Guides for Livonia & Garden City Buyers

Many homes here are established family houses that get updated a room at a time, so these guides are the most relevant:

Scheduling and Quoting

Call us at (734) 444-7277 with your address and what you are buying. Delivery is quoted per address and per item. Mention a split-level layout, a basement destination or a narrow upstairs stair when you call so the plan fits the house.

Delivery days run Wednesday through Sunday, matching our store hours. Someone 18 or older needs to be home to direct placement and sign after inspecting each piece. The full process is on our Southeast Michigan delivery page. Neighbors to the south and west can see our Westland and Canton & Plymouth pages.

Anything ordered through our Amazon or Walmart listings ships from those retailers on their own schedules, not on our trucks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you deliver to Livonia and Garden City?

Yes. We deliver from our Romulus warehouse to Livonia (48150, 48152 and 48154) and Garden City (48135). The drive north on Merriman, Middlebelt or I-275 usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes depending on where you are. Call (734) 444-7277 with your address and the items you are buying, and we will quote the delivery for that address.

What is the hardest part of delivering to a tri-level home?

The short half-flights. A tri-level or split-level usually has five to eight steps between levels, often with a wall or railing at each end and very little landing space. A long sofa can clear the stairs but fail the turn at the top. Measure the stair width, the landing depth and the ceiling height above the steps, and compare them to the piece before you buy.

Will a king bed fit in a Garden City bedroom?

It depends on the room, so measure before you buy. Many Garden City homes are compact post-war houses with modest bedrooms. A king mattress is about 76 by 80 inches before the frame adds several more, and you still want around two feet of walking space on the sides you use. In smaller rooms a queen often leaves a far more livable layout.

Can I pick up furniture myself instead?

Yes, for in-stock items. Our warehouse is at 6345 Beverly Plaza in Romulus, open Wednesday through Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm and Sunday noon to 3pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. Bring a truck, van or trailer that fits the piece, plus straps and blankets, and our staff will help you load. Call first to confirm the item is in stock.

Do I need to be home for the delivery?

Someone 18 or older needs to be there to show the crew where each piece goes and to sign for the delivery. That person should inspect everything before signing: open drawers, check corners and surfaces, and write any damage on the paperwork itself. A note on the receipt carries much more weight than a comment made at the door.
